  5. TWICE Says They’re Amazed By Park Jin Young’s Ability To Write Lyrics From Girls’ Perspective TWICE expressed their amazement at JYP Entertainment founder Park Jin Young’s songwriting skills on “Yoo Hee Yeol‘s Sketchbook”! See Also: TWICE’s “What Is Love?” Becomes Fastest K-Pop Girl Group MV To Hit 40 Million Views During the April 14 episode of the KBS music variety show, TWICE talked about their new title track “What is Love?” and the meaning behind the song’s lyrics. Leader Jihyo remarked, “Producer Park Jin Young personally composed our title track this time. The song is about a girl wanting to experience the love she learned about in books, movies, and dramas for herself in real life.” MC Yoo Hee Yeol jokingly replied, “I heard that Park Jin Young wrote your new song and was very worried. But as soon as I heard it, I thought that it would do well. Fortunately, there was no ‘JYP’ in the [song’s] introduction.” As the TWICE members all cracked up at his comment, Yoo Hee Yeol went on to ask, “[Park] Jin Young also wrote all the lyrics himself, right?” After TWICE confirmed that he had, he continued, “I looked at the lyrics, and they were totally from the perspective of a young girl. How does Park Jin Young write [lyrics] like that?” TWICE earnestly replied, “We want to know too. We’re really curious ourselves.” Yoo Hee Yeol then asked the group to pick the line from “What is Love?” that they found most girlish, and several of the members instantly agreed on Sana’s line, “They say it’s sweet like candy/They say it feels like flying through the sky.” Nayeon speculated, “In my opinion, it seems like producer [Park Jin Young] wrote the lyrics while using the ideal image of a young girl in his mind and imagining [her perspective].” Jeongyeon added, “He also choreographs our dances,” while the other members chimed in, “He even teaches us the choreography himself.” Expressing his disbelief, Yoo Hee Yeol asked TWICE which part Park Jin Young had choreographed. To his surprise, they revealed that he had choreographed the dance to the same girlish line that they had mentioned earlier. You can check out TWICE’s performances from the show here! 6. Born in Kyoto, Momo is one of three Japanese members of girl group Twice and the best-known non-Korean star in K-pop. Talent-spotted after appearing in a dance video online, she has helped Twice win fans in Japan The idea of a Japanese singer in a K-pop outfit could be seen as a political statement, given the historical antagonism between South Korea and Japan. But youngsters in Asia increasingly choose their allegiances based on fashion and pop culture, instead of history or politics. And K-pop entertainment firms, whether to promote international exchange or simply to tap into a star’s transnational crossover appeal, are recruiting band members from neighbouring countries. Of course, Asia has produced its share of crossover stars in the past – such as Hong Kong’s Leslie Cheung, Japan’s Namie Amuro, South Korea’s Rain – but the rise of K-pop has ushered in a new era for multicultural pop stars in Asia. And Momo, one of the three Japanese members of dominant K-pop girl group Twice, is arguably the best-known non-Korean star in K-pop today. This is her story so far. Early life Momo, whose full name is Momo Hirai, was born and raised in Kyoto, Japan. The 21-year-old started dancing at the age of three, training alongside her elder sister. Like Justin Bieber and many other pop stars in the YouTube era, Momo and her sister were spotted in an online video – in their case, South Korea’s JYP Entertainment, the firm behind bands such as 2PM and Got7. To join Twice, Momo had to compete against other young hopefuls on Sixteen, a Korean reality TV show. While initially eliminated, Momo was brought back at the end. “I was fascinated by the powerful yet precise dance performances of K-pop. I loved Rain and 2NE1. I always wanted to thrill people with my dancing – just as how K-pop dancing thrilled me,” Momo said during an interview with the Chosun newspaper. Her role in Twice Given her dance training and extensive experience, Momo has some of the best moves in the nine-member girl group. And as one of the outfit’s three Japanese members, Momo is credited with boosting the group’s popularity in her home country. Since their 2015 debut, Twice have become one of the dominant K-pop groups not only in South Korea but also in Japan, where their Japanese-language album debuted at No 2 on the Oricon Albums Chart. As the group broke through, Japan’s NHK News even ran a feature about how multicultural groups such as Twice could help solve political problems between Seoul and Tokyo. Her solo work Having only launched her career fairly recently – in 2015 – Momo has yet to embark on any solo projects. Before joining Twice, though, as a “K-pop trainee” Momo performed as a dancer in several videos for fellow JYP groups including Got7’s Stop Stop It and Miss A’s Only You. And in 2016, after becoming a member of Twice, Momo also starred in Sweet Dream, a music video by Kim Hee-chul and Min Kyung-hoon. Momo has described her hip-hop-influenced dance style as “urban with a feminine touch” and says she prefers choreographed routines over free-styling. Besides Namie Amuro, Momo says she looks up to other dancer-singers such as American singer-songwriter Tinashe. Her image Momo is famed for her perfect bangs, which she says highlights her eyes and makes her look less “cold” or “strong”. As a dancer, Momo famously lost 7kg to be fitter and adhere to the famously tight requirements of the Korean pop industry. “I didn’t eat well while filming Sixteen because I was so stressed out. So people said I came off kind of strong. After the programme ended, I wanted to look ‘brighter’ so I got bangs again,” she said in an interview with GQ Korea. “I just don’t want to be seen as a strong person.” In her words “Yes [I look in the mirror often] … I continuously wonder about how my face looks. I’m a little nervous because I don’t have a lot of make-up on right now,” she told GQ Korea. And in a letter to her fans, she once wrote: “Even though our first promotions have ended, I will continue to work hard in order to present a better image [to you].” cr: scmp
  7. [V Report] Twice’s Jihyo thanks fans for their support (Naver V app) Jihyo of girl group Twice communicated with her fans in a live broadcast held via Naver’s V app Friday. In the broadcast, the singer thanked the group’s fan club Once for its constant support. She said she has been feeling really grateful for her fans’ love and support recently. “I’ve been thinking this a lot while promoting this album -- I even posted it on our social media account, on Instagram,” she said. (Twice's Instagram) Earlier in the day, she wrote on the group’s Instagram account, “Thank you so much Once. It’s not enough even if I thank you a hundred or thousand times. Thank you for always being with us. Let’s keep spending happy days standing by each other. Thank you.” “It’s not something we can take for granted but if I don’t stay alert, I might become full of myself and I might think that I always deserve to be loved,” she said. “It doesn’t mean that I thought that way but while promoting this album, I’ve felt especially grateful and blessed.” “So I wanted to tell you today that I’m always grateful (for your support),” she said. 8. TWICE Explains How They Reacted When They First Saw Their “Cheer Up” Choreography TWICE revealed their reactions to a part of the “Cheer Up” dance during their appearance on the May 3 episode of KBS2’s “Happy Together.” When Yoo Jae Suk asked what they meant by being embarrassed by their “posing like flowers and Nayeon watering them choreography” in “Cheer Up,” TWICE’s Dahyun expressed, “Contrary to how people see us, we honestly aren’t very good at acting cute.” She explained how at the beginning of the song, eight of the TWICE members pair up and pose as flowers. Embarrassed, Nayeon continued, saying that she is pretending to shake and spread seeds with her hands, before she waters the “flowers” so they can bloom. Remembering the first time they saw the dance, Dahyun commented, “It made us cringe,” Nayeon said, “We were so taken aback that the atmosphere [in the room] was bad for about five minutes or so,” while Jihyo added, “That’s right. We didn’t say anything.” “When we were watching the choreographers dance and we saw someone ‘watering the flowers,’ all nine of us thought, “As long as I’m not that person,'” Nayeon revealed. “I didn’t know it would end up being me.” See the three TWICE members demonstrate the dance as well as a version with the other guests joining in! 9. Watch: TWICE’s Dahyun And Momo Steal The Show Dancing To BTS, MOMOLAND, Sunmi, And More TWICE’s Momo and Dahyun impressed as they each brought their own characters to the dance floor in SBS’s “Running Man.” The episode of “Running Man” that aired on April 29 featured a special guest appearance by TWICE. After TWICE and the cast were paired up in a random draw, the pairs competed in activities each TWICE member is most confident in to win points. When it was her turn, Momo suggested a dance competition. Yoo Jae Suk asked where each member ranks in terms of dance skills in TWICE, and Nayeon and Jihyo answered, “Momo is way ahead of the rest of us. Other than Momo, the rest of us are pretty similar when it comes to dance skills.” Nayeon even said, “She’s been dancing since she was three.” Momo started things off with a solo dance performance that left everyone in awe. As they watched her, the cast looked despondent as they said, “How are we supposed to beat her? It’s impossible.” Momo then brought her partner Song Ji Hyo to the stage for a couple dance, and as Song Ji Hyo is known for being quite wooden with her dancing, the cast began to joke, “We have a chance now. We can do it!” Out of everyone, Momo’s biggest competition ended up being fellow TWICE member Dahyun, who had everyone laughing with her interesting dance moves. Though she was not as technically skilled as Momo, her facial expressions and passion to dance to any song that came on made her one to watch for. At one point, BTS’s “Fire” came on and Dahyun took center stage, stealing the show until Momo fired back by dancing to Sunmi’s “Gashina.” When MOMOLAND’s “Bboom Bboom” began playing, both Momo and Dahyun rushed forward, and they danced energetically to the song together. For the last song, Celeb Five’s “I Wanna Be a Celeb,” they tried to give the other TWICE members a chance, with Chaeyoung coming forward to dance, but Dahyun and Momo couldn’t hold back and stole the show once again. 10. TWICE reveal they didn't like the overly cute choreography for 'Cheer Up' TWICE shared their initial reaction to the choreography for "Cheer Up". On the May 3 airing of KBS 2TV's 'Happy Together 3', Dahyun revealed, "Unlike how we may seem, we are actually not very good at doing cute stuff." She then explained the dance moves to "Cheer Up" and said, "We appear doing the flower stand pose and Nayeon unnie gives us water." Nayeon added, "The atmosphere was cold when we first saw the dance because we were startled. After seeing the parts, I just hoped I'm not the one giving the water. But that ended up being me." cr:allkpop
  11. [V Report Plus] Behind the scenes of Jihyo’s ‘Love Letter’ re-enactment (Naver V app) Jihyo of girl group Twice recreated the famous “Ogenkidesuka (How are you)?” scene from the 1995 Japanese film “Love Letter” on the latest episode of “Twice TV” released via Naver’s V app Wednesday. The episode showed behind-the-scenes footage of the filming of the music video for the group’s latest track “What is Love?” which parodies popular scenes from romance films. “It’s another parody of the movie. It’s the famous scene -- I’m sure you know. (The scene where the heroine shouts) ‘Ogenkidesuka?’ I’m going to recreate that scene,” the singer said. As she had to tearfully shout out the lyrics instead of the original lines from the film, Jihyo was worried that the performance would be awkward. “I feel awkward already. I wish my bandmates were here with me,” she said. “What should I do? It’s definitely going to be awkward.” She struggled, but with the help of artificial tears, she finally finished the scene. “I think trying to cry on cue could be a very valuable experience in life. When else would I do this?” she said. http://www.vlive.tv/video/69346 CR: KPOPHERALD

  14. Watch: TWICE’s Aegyo Makes Lee Kwang Soo Want To Change His Name On “Running Man” On the latest episode of “Running Man,” TWICE brought Lee Kwang Soo to his knees with their adorable aegyo! The April 29 broadcast of the SBS variety show featured an aegyo acrostic poem battle, in which the TWICE members competed to come up with the cutest acrostic poem using a cast member’s name. Nayeon went first, using Kim Jong Kook’s name to put her adorable charms on full display. The “Running Man” cast members couldn’t hold back their smiles, with Kim Jong Kook screaming and hiding his face in embarassment. Yoo Jae Suk commented admiringly, “She’s an aegyo expert,” while Lee Kwang Soo passionately declared, “She needs to be designated a Living National Treasure immediately!” The next challenger, TWICE’s Jihyo, also chose Kim Jong Kook’s name for her own acrostic poem. With Kim Jong Kook’s name proving to be a popular choice, Lee Kwang Soo surmised that the idols were opting to use it because the “Kook” syllable was easy to play up in a cute way. Yang Se Chan enviously remarked, “Wow, it must be Jong Kook’s day today,” while Lee Kwang Soo jealously lamented, “How come my name isn’t Lee Kwang Kook?!” In the end, however, both Yang Se Chan and Lee Kwang Soo were able to enjoy their own moments in the spotlight: Sana chose to address her acrostic poem to her partner Yang Se Chan, while Nayeon used Lee Kwang Soo’s name for her encore round. After hearing Nayeon’s adorable poem, Lee Kwang Soo couldn’t help screaming in delight as he fell to the ground. Check out the clip of Nayeon kicking off the aegyo battle below! LE shared people’s warm reactions to their unexpected style and said, “It was a concept that was hard for us to try because of our image. Since many people have expectations about our sexiness, we hesitated. The track came out and it was perfect for retro. The video and outfits stand out because of its simplicity and mysterious vibe.
  17. Anchor apologizes to Twice for ‘service’ comment Anchor Lee Jung-pyo has apologized to Twice for his inappropriate comment at a university festival. Last Friday, Twice performed some of its hit tracks, including “What is Love?” and “Likey,” at a festival organized by Sungkyunkwan University. After its performance, Twice left the stage. Lee, who was hosting the festival, said to the audience, “Everyone, Twice won’t come back (by just shouting) for an encore. At a time like this, (shout) ‘service.’” (JYP Entertainment) He repeated the comment, encouraging the audience to shout louder. But after the festival, Lee became embroiled in controversy, as the word “service” was deemed to be inappropriate. Many posted on online websites that the word is used at bars and karaoke joints. Lee wrote an apology and delivered it to S:with, the university’s student committee, after it asked for his public apology. The committee posted the message on its social media account Monday. “I am very sorry to the students, the student committee, Twice and fans,” it read. “Seeing the students who were excited by Twice’s performance, I thought it would be nice if the band could sing one more song. Thinking of the term ‘fan service,’ I used the word service. It was shortsighted of me.” By Im Eun-byel (silverstar@heraldcorp.com) CR: KPOPHERALD Original article (from Sungkyunkwan University, Student Union FB)

It was an evening of delight and wonder that began with the members of TWICE appearing in swings suspended above the stage as they sang “You In My Heart.” They had everyone dancing along as they performed hits like “Like OOH-AHH,” “Cheer Up,” and “Likey,” as well as other dance tracks like “Ponytail” and “Hold Me Tight.” Keeping with their fantasy park theme, the stage was decorated like a theme park and dancers appeared in a variety of costumes to give the appearance of TWICE being the highlight performance of a theme park parade. TWICE seemed to be taking fans through various areas of their fantasy park with different sets and outfits. First moving to a sparkling winter wonderland with a rendition of “Someone Like Me” and “Turtle” and then an utilizing phones mounted on selfie sticks to play with various selfie filters and goof around. They also showed a different side when they appeared in suits to perform “Touchdown” and “Signal,” as well as a cover of BoA’s “Valenti.” The covers continued and gave the members the opportunity to take on various genres and concepts. First up was Dahyun, who covered Rain’s “Rainism” and made it her own as “Dahyunism.” After the performance, she also shared that her cane had unfortunately broken during the stage, and she was given the chance to recreate the moment. Not having a cane anymore, Dahyun improvised by using the straw from her water bottle and had everyone laughing with her quick thinking. Following her was Jihyo, Momo, and Tzuyu, who performed Beyoncé’s “End of Time.” Tzuyu stated, “We wanted to try a cool concept that was different from our usual sweet and cute concept,” and all three agreed that they were happy with the way the performance came out. Nayeon and Jeongyeon took on “My Ear’s Candy” by Baek Ji Young and 2PM’s Taecyeon, taking turns to wear a pair of sunglasses to transform into their JYP senior. They later explained, “We were so nervous about doing Taecyeon’s parts. We studied his videos a lot to truly get into character and we kept telling ourselves, ‘I am a beast-dol.'” Lastly, Mina, Sana, and Chaeyoung performed Wax’s “Oppa,” and after the performance, they also called out to their female fans and younger fans as they said, “While we were rehearsing, we kept talking about how our female fans and younger fans would be sad that we’re only calling out to our oppas.” The members then changed up the lyrics from “Oppa” to “ONCE” so they could call out to all of their fans at the same time. Following the unit performances, the festivities continued with hits like “Knock Knock,” “What is Love?,” “TT,” and “Heart Shaker,” as well as other hidden gems from their albums like “Sweet Talker,” “Only You,” and “Missing U.” TWICE also covered WINNER’s 2017 song “Really Really” and performed “FFW,” a track from their “Twicetagram” album that had never been performed before. The members continuously moved between the various extended stage areas to get one step closer to their fans, and their fans reciprocated by cheering as loudly as they could. There was even a special moment near the end of the concert when fans made hearts over their heads with their arms and the concert venue was filled with a sea of hearts directed at TWICE. Just when it looked like the concert was over, TWICE returned to the stage for their encore, performing “One in a Million,” “What is Love?” (Acoustic Version) and a medley of their hit songs. For approximately three hours, TWICE and ONCE shared a special and unforgettable experience together. Having captivated 18,000 fans across three sold-out concerts in Seoul, TWICE is set to take their fantasy park to Japan next. They will perform at the Saitama Super Arena on May 26 and 27, and at the Osaka-jo Hall on June 2 and 3, all of which are sold out. TWICE also has a concert in Singapore planned as well. CR: soompi
