North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Trump officially met at the 2018 North Korea-United States Summit in Singapore.

The leaders greeted each other in front of a hotel at Sentosa Island and shook hands for approximately 12 seconds. Their meeting and handshake is historic as it is the first time a North Korean leader and U.S. president have met.

Following their handshake, the pair went inside to talk. Kim Jong Un acknowledged the two countries’ previously strained relationship and said, “The path to coming here today was not an easy path. Our mistakes held us back and our wrong practices sometimes covered our eyes and ears. However, we have overcome everything to arrive here today.”

President Trump voiced his agreement and shared his belief that their talks will be successful. He also said the two countries will have a good relationship without suspicion.

Following their one-on-one talk, the leaders will have a larger bilateral discussion including various advisers. President Trump is scheduled to have a press conference at 4 p.m. KST after which he will leave the hotel around 6:30 p.m. KST and fly to the United States at 7 p.m. KST.
